Yo, Is This Racist?

Yo, ask me if something is racist and I'll tell you. If it's absolutely necessary for you to know, I'm not white.

Anonymous asked: A few years ago, my grandpa asked what I'm doing for "Martin Luther Coon" day, probably just so he could use the hilarious joke that I imagine he got in a AOL forward from his racist buddies. I recounted this to my boyfriend recently, who said that his grandpa used to just straight up call it "Nigger Day". My question is, is it okay for me to not call out bigoted old people because they and their dated prejudices are probably going to die soon? I also have grandparents that aren't racist.

Yo, first of all, of course, fuck your grandfather. What a racist dick!

Now, I get that family is complicated, and you do what you have to do. But, assuming you’ve already asked him not to say racist shit around you, realize that this is a person who respects you so little that he can’t even keep open and unapologetic racism in check to respect your point of view. This isn’t just some “oh, my aunt was weird when I said I was moving to Spanish Harlem” shit, this is a dude who is purposefully explicitly doing the opposite of what you’ve not at all unreasonably asked of him.

That being said, maybe just drink a lot during family gatherings.
